News and announcements:
We wish to welcome all our new and current patients and
encourage you to utilize our Maple Avenue Pediatrics Web Site. If you are
visiting our practice for the first time, use these helpful links to review the
HIPAA
Privacy Policy. You can then print an Acknowledgement
of Receipt of Privacy Policy, New
Patient Form and Child’s
Health History form, complete them at your leisure and bring them with you
for your first visit. This will help to save time before your visit with the
doctor.
Spring is almost here!
So far it has been a mild flu season, but there have been some cases
reported. The CDC reports flu in New
Jersey as being local. We still have flu
shots available for those who have yet to receive them. The spring allergy season is also around the
corner. March is a great time to
schedule a consultation about spring allergies before the trees and flowers are
in bloom. Also, now is the time to book your camp physicals. Please note that all children going to
sleepaway camp need a dose of the meningococcal vaccine (Menactra). We routinely give this vaccine at 11 and 16
years of age.
We have started to do travel consultations. These travel consultations are not covered by
insurance and will cost $100. We will
research the country that you are traveling to and determine if the following
are needed: 1) additional vaccines, 2) malaria prophylaxis, and 3) treatment
for traveler’s diarrhea. If the typhoid
vaccine is needed this will be an additional $100 that is also not covered by
insurance. At the time you schedule your
appointment, please make sure that you make us aware of the country you are
traveling to and provide us with documentation of any vaccines previously
received at a travel clinic.
We have also begun to offer Gardasil to boys ages 12 and
up. This vaccine has already been given
for several years to girls. The vaccine
provides protection against the 4 subtypes of Human Papillomavirus with the
largest disease burden. It is a 3 dose
series in which the second dose is given 2 months after the first dose and the
third dose is given six months after the first one. In boys the vaccine protects against genital,
oral, and anal warts and cancers. It
will also protect against the transmission of HPV to females where it can cause
cervical cancer.
